Yoga Mythbusters: “Yoga Is Just Stretching”

“Yoga? Isn’t that basically just stretching?”

Well… kind of. But also, not really. 😂

Stretching can definitely be part of yoga, but yoga is about so much more than trying to get bendier.

There’s movement, strength, balance, breath, body awareness, concentration, rest… and sometimes a surprising amount of effort!

And I think this is another reason people can have a funny idea of what yoga actually is.

When you see yoga on Instagram, it’s often someone looking very serene, draped over themselves in a ridiculously bendy pose, looking like they haven’t got a single muscle or joint in their body. 😂

So it’s easy to think yoga is basically “stretch yourself into weird shapes and try to touch your toes.”

But it really isn’t.

What Yoga Is Really About

At its heart, yoga is about bringing together movement, breath and awareness.

Yes, you might stretch.

But you might also build strength, work on your balance, practise coordination, challenge your muscles, slow your breathing down or simply take some time to notice how you’re feeling.

That’s one of the things I love about yoga: it can be adapted to suit different bodies, abilities,  experience levels, and your mood.

You don’t have to be fit, flexible or experienced to start. There are plenty of ways to practise yoga for beginners, including gentle yoga and slower styles of practice.

And you don’t have to be doing an incredibly complicated pose for any of that to happen.

Yoga Isn’t Just About Flexibility

This links back to my first Yoga Mythbuster: you don’t need to be flexible to do yoga.

Yoga can help improve flexibility and mobility over time, but that’s only part of the picture.

You can practise yoga to build strength, improve balance, become more aware of your body, support your breathing and feel more confident moving around.

And if you’re someone who feels stiff or thinks you’re “too inflexible” for yoga, you absolutely aren’t.

You might just need a practice that meets you where you are.

Slow Doesn’t Always Mean Easy

You don’t have to move quickly for your body to work hard.

A slow flow yoga practice can still be strong. Holding a pose for a few breaths, moving slowly and deliberately, or spending time working on your balance can be surprisingly challenging.

Sometimes slowing things down actually makes you more aware of what your body is doing—and you might notice muscles working that you didn’t even know were there! 😂

So when I describe a class as slow flow, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be lying down for an hour ( but you can if you want to…that is a legitimate option! )

It means we’ll take our time.

We’ll have space to notice the breath, move with intention and explore different options for your body.

It can be slow and strong, slow and gentle, or somewhere in between.

And that’s the beauty of yoga—you don’t have to choose between challenging yourself and looking after yourself.

Yoga Can Be Strong Too

Yoga doesn’t always look like a workout, but that doesn’t mean your body isn’t working.

Things like Warrior poses, Chair pose, Plank, Bridge and balancing postures can all challenge your muscles and build strength.

And you don’t have to hold the “perfect” version of a pose for it to count. There is no such thing as the perfect pose. Perfect to who? If it feels good in your body then it’s perfect.

You can use a wall, a chair, blocks or other props. You can modify the pose. You can take a break.

That’s still yoga.

Every Body Can Practise Yoga

One of the things I wholeheartedly believe is how adaptable yoga can be.

Someone might practise standing.

Someone else might practise mostly from a chair.

Someone might want a stronger practice.

Someone else might need something slow and gentle.

Someone might be incredibly flexible or hyper mobile .

Someone else might be stiff as a board. 😂

They’re all practising yoga.

There isn’t one “right” yoga body, and there isn’t one right way to practise.

That’s especially important to me as a teacher. I want my classes to feel inclusive, beginner-friendly and welcoming, rather than like somewhere you have to prove yourself.

Myth Busted

Yoga isn’t just stretching.

It can help you develop strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, body awareness and confidence.

It can give you space to breathe, slow down and reconnect with yourself.

And sometimes, yes, you might get a really lovely stretch along the way. 😂

But you don’t have to be bendy, and you don’t have to push yourself into uncomfortable positions to “get the most” out of yoga.

Yoga can be slow and strong, gentle and challenging, restful and energising.

There’s room for all of it.

Wanna Give It a Go?

My classes are gentle, inclusive and beginner-friendly, with plenty of options so you can move in a way that feels right for your body.

Whether you’re looking for gentle yoga, slow flow yoga, want to build strength and mobility, or you’re simply curious about trying yoga for the first time, you’re welcome.

You don’t need to arrive flexible.

You don’t need to know what you’re doing.

You just need to turn up.

Thanks for reading, and catch you next time for another Yoga Mythbuster.
